Why OCPI

Why Mobi.e chose the OCPI protocol as the foundation of the new interoperability platform.

The Portuguese electric mobility ecosystem has historically been built around the principles of interoperability, openness and technological neutrality, enabling seamless interaction between Charge Point Operators (CPOs), Electric Mobility Service Providers (EMSPs) and end users.

In the context of the new legal framework, Mobi.e aims to reinforce these principles by adopting internationally recognized standards that simplify integration processes, foster innovation and promote interoperability at both national and European levels.

The Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI) protocol has been selected as the foundation for the new Mobi.e interoperability platform due to the following characteristics:

  • widespread adoption across the electric mobility industry;
  • open and royalty-free specification;
  • support for multiple business models;
  • compatibility with modern API and security practices;
  • active international community and governance model;
  • flexibility to support future interoperability requirements.

MOBI.Hub adopts OCPI 2.2.1 as its reference specification while maintaining backward compatibility with OCPI 2.2 whenever required.
